Agriculture Pavilion Mission statement:

"Celebrate and recognize the Arroyo Grande Valley (and surrounding area) agricultural industry and provide agriculture related educational activities and displays for the community."

 

This year’s agriculture pavilion will feature booth by local agriculturalist and agriculture organizations.

2.  STOMP OFF – Grape Stomp – Sponsored by Laetitia Winery and Vineyards.  An old fashioned grape stomp competition between some of our local dignitaries.  After the competition the grape barrels will be open to the public to stomp around in!    We think it will make a great photo opportunity for you and your family!   Just think "I Love Lucy".  Do you remember.........Lucy Stomps Grapes  - of course, we don't want that to happen at our competition!

 Jeremy Rose of the California Bee Company of San Luis Obispo – Author of Bee Keeping on the Central Coast will provide educational tools and will talk about bee keeping to folks who drop by the booth. He will have some honey and candles available for sale too.   -  http://californiabeecompany.com

 Grieb Ranch History/Plant Feed – a historical presentation of 6 generations of a local agricultural family in the Arroyo Grande Valley.  Also their Manure Tea will be available for purchase.

 Waller Family Flower Seed History – 104 years of Waller family farming in Arroyo Grande and South San Luis Obispo County. A slide show of historic images detailing the history of Waller Flowerseed Company, at one time the largest seed production farm in the world. Historic images showing farming technology from hand seeders to horse drawn equipment to several generations of tractors and seed production techniques will be presented

 Plant Clinic/Gopher Goo - Dr. Heather Vallier is asking the public to bring in their plants for a plant diagnosis.  She will have her microscopes available for a hands-on learning activity.  She is the inventor of Gopher Goo.  http://gophergoo.com

 Joe Seals - Author of the recently published book Central Coast Gardening Essentials.   Arroyo Grande resident, Joe Seals holds a degree in Environmental Horticulture, wrote and edited for Sunset Magazine and Sunset Books. He has taught at UCLA, Allan Hancock College and Cuesta College and is now the Director of the Horticulture Program for the Adult Education Vocational Programs for Lucia Mar.  He will be offering a talk on “Managing Gophers” at 11:00 and 4:00

 4. Veggie Decorating – Vegetable craft activity for the kids sponsored by Spencer’s Fresh Markets.  -  http://spencersfreshmarkets.com

 5.  Dairy Table – Simulated cow milking and butter making experience for the kids

6.  Master Gardeners & UC IPM KioskMaster Gardeners will be available to the public to answer questions about home gardening and provide educational materials.  The University of California Statewide IPM Program has developed a portable, touch-screen computer kiosk program to help consumers solve pest problems, protect the environment, and prevent runoff from residential landscapes. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/FAQ/kiosk.html

 7.  Arroyo Grande In Bloom – A nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to beautification, heritage, and promoting pride in order to cultivate a strong and vibrant community.  -  http://www.aginbloom.org

 9.  Fiona Ma’s Team – Eat Local, Buy California Grown Campaign – Assemblymember Ma’s “Team” will providing educational material regarding the recently passed resolution ACR 42, by the State Senate and State Assembly.  ACR-42 Eat Local, Buy California Grown Day is a resolution that urges Californians to dedicate Sundays to eating California grown foods. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/24/idUS173928+24-Jun-2011+PRN20110624

 

The Arroyo Grande Valley was first opened for settlement in 1868 and the business district consisted of a black smith shop, stage station and schoolhouse. " The valley was a tangled mass of brush, vines and trees, of so dense a growth that the creek had no channel but spread over the entire valley during a fresher. 

Hence the valley has been built up in successive layers, 20 feet or more deep, of decaying vegetation and sediment from one of the richest hill countries to be found in the states.
